I bet some of you out there had to deal with this situation. We've got a metric ass load of network cables and a royal shit ton of power cables in one of our server rooms, and we're trying to figure out a better management solution than throwing stuff on the floor.

Have any of you found products that facilitate management of spare cables? We've tried velcro wraps but no one likes to re-wrap a bundle of cables after they've retrieved the cable they want (I know right, velcro is sooo haaard to use). So I think the best solution is something you can just throw cables on to.

Well, I use the incredibly high-tech services of my local Walmart. I bought a truck load of those little Sterilite plastic bins with the white lids - they're clear but the lids are white - and they're stackable. Just slap a label on the front indicating the general contents and fill. Even if you just shove the cables in... if you can squeeze the lid on then it will stay. When you need something, then you're just reading a bunch of labels on the little bins until you find the right one... then dump out contents... find the specific cable, fan, card, DIMM, powersupply, whatever you are looking for... then put the rest back in the bin.

Keeps the server room clean, but doesn't require more than a few minutes to clean up and organize.

YMMV - :)
Buy a gun and learn to use it... because when every second counts - the police will be there in 6-10 minutes.
